Teaching Options

Phil is a very well known, popular and respected professional photographer – a local whose uniqueness comes from his passion to teach and mentor beginners to professionals to achieve the very best from their own photography style.

Phil training method is based on a combination of classroom and practical sessions. This method ensures that students really master the camera controls and capture images that they would have previously thought impossible.  His tutorials will take you from how to hold your camera up to capturing stunning images.

There is nowhere better than the North East coast, or the vibrant Newcastle upon Tyne area, to learn how to really control your camera. Whether you are currently shooting in automatic mode and want to learn how to take better photographs for pleasure, or you want to start your own photography business, then he has  a course that will fulfil your photographic expectations.

Course delivery can be face-to-face or via a webinar service. All teaching is underpinned and supported by clear visual tutorial material which is shared electronically after each tutorial session. Students will learn how to take full advantage of digital camera controls and will be encouraged put their learning into practice photographing a range of photographic themes. Access to a private social media page allows student groups to complete homework assignments and to get constructive feedback outside of the structured lesson plan. This combination of classroom learning and practical application ensures that students rapidly gain confidence and love their photography.

Course options support complete beginners through to professional photographers who want add to their existing portfolio.

Basics and Beyond Photography Course

A beginner’s course is aimed at students who want to get out of automatic mode and take confident control of their cameras and all it’s functions. The course is structured to work for a small group of between five to ten students. The tutorials are delivered to create a positive teaching environment where students can learn together and inspire each other.

Wedding Photography

This comprehensive course includes a full day classroom session and an on-site church practical shoot with a Bride and Groom and a Priest. The objective of the course is to provide photographers with everything they need to know, from winning wedding jobs to delivery of stunning images that generate great feedback and future business..
day Course – Aimed at a small group of students: Cost £200 per person with an addition offer of a third day and on-line support.

Studio Photography

This course will cover all technical aspects of camera and lighting settings as well as how to work with a subject to help them (and you) to relax.
4 hour tutoring session. Aimed at 1 to 1 or
up to 1 to 4: Cost £150 per person.

Location Photography

These sessions provide the expert support necessary to help get the best results on a shoot, especially if it is a special occasion or an opportunity that will not be readily available again. Settings are as varied as Urban or industrial locations to dance shoots, from wildlife to sports or family parties.
Aimed at group tutoring on location or for a specific event/activity. Cost £35 per person per hour – full price relevant to the location and the timing of the activity is available on application.

Beamish Photography

A group of 4 photographers will meet on at Beamish. We will spend around 40 mins working through a tutorial ensuring you will learn the best method of capturing beautiful images.  This will  cover both DSLR cameras and mirror-less cameras.  We will then work thought the site capturing images in multiple locations this will be for approximately 3 hours.  We will also take a break to discuss any concerns and resolve them.  One student who I guided through the process won the best image of the year from his camera club.

Landscape Photography

Speed Light Tutorial

This short course of 2 classroom hours and 1 hour practical hour is aimed at any photographer wishing to learn more about this useful resource. The tutorial aim to explore how adding light when capturing images both internally and externally improves the quality of the images captured without the resulting images looking artificially lit.
Aimed at group teaching 5 to 6 persons. 3 hour course; Cost £70 per person.
